Featured Artists At The Vault

Leila Kirkley will be the featured artist at the Kinion Fine Art Vault for the month of June and July 2008 SGA2.jpg
Leila.jpg
Background: Leila (pronounced Lee-EYE-lah) Kirkley was born and raised in the Midwest. As a child, her favorite pastime was drawing and painting. Later on, however, she was attracted to the sciences. She began her career as a health professional in Los Angeles, and, after earning a doctorate in psychology, became a psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years.

In the mid l980’s she felt an intense need to fulfill herself creatively and became drawn to oil painting. It was a life altering decision. Longing to paint like the Old Masters, she discovered a small atelier called Mission Renaissance that taught fine art according to classical techniques – drawing and oil painting from life. It was a perfect fit. She studied with a number of Los Angeles artists including Larry Gluck of Mission Renaissance and Bill Martin and John Strong of Martin-Strong Fine Arts. In l996 the growing conflict between the demands of her practice and the magnetic pull of painting led her to Sedona where powerful creative forces stimulate those who are open to them. Liela's studio is on the edge of the Coconino Forest where her eyes fed by the beauty of the high desert of Northern Arizona.

Background: Sharon Abshagen is an oil painter who specializes in the Four Corners region. She is originally from Longmont, Colorado and has lived in Durango for the Last 32 years. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ft. Lewis College with an emphasis in fiber art she spent many years painting watercolors and weaving large tapestries. After joining the local painting group she realized that her first love was oil painting and has been concentrating on this art form ever since. Sharon finds painting on location exciting and challenging and hopes this love of the out-of-doors comes through in her paintings. Working from these studies she then creates larger studio paintings.

Colorado artist Sharon Abshagen says that “my paintings are the language I use to communicate the natural beauty of the landscape through the use of light and atmosphere. I want to capture the mood of the moment when I am outside painting,” . She never tires of looking for the varied light in the Four Corners region.

Sharon Abshagen, is a member of the American Academy of Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico and the Plein Air Painters of the Four Corners.

Sandra Lynn Brennecke

Whimsical to elegant Jewelry
Brennecke1.jpg

Background: Sandra Lynn Brennecke, a healer, nurse, teacher, artist and lover of life: some of the many treasured Spirit given gifts that are avenues through which Sandy has created and worked with her life lessons. Artistically she finds joy in working with precious metals and color; the freedom to play with both is reflected in her creations. From whimsical to elegant, the delight of discovery and pride of workmanship is evident in every piece.

Sandy and her husband are full time RV’ers since her husband’s retirement in 2002. Born into a military family, she has traveled extensively and still finds places she would love to visit. Although the Seattle area is where she settled after serving as a nurse in Vietnam and where she raised her six children, she finds the South West with its beautiful red rocks and friendly people nurturing and creatively stimulating; something that keeps calling her back to refresh and renew.

MLB1.jpg

Background:A native Pennsylvanian, I drew and painted horses as a child. In the 1970’s I studied for one year with Patricia Cochran who instructed in the style of the Old Master’s introducing the exciting world of color and light. In 1981 I moved to the Grand Canyon and worked as a mule guide for three years. Though the long hours allowed me little time for painting, it did provide a livelihood and a magnificent landscape of an extraordinary visual playground and a constant source of artistic inspiration. In 1984, trained as a skilled hairdresser, I gave up my out door adventure to serve as owner and operator of the Bight Angel Hair Design on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for the next sixteen years. I coordinated the Art Exhibitions on the North Porch of the El Tovar Hotel for six years and continued to paint and sell my art. Many of the images were of my favorite subject matter, the panoramic Grand Canyon. I completed oil painting classes taught by Tom Darrow at the Scottsdale Art Institute which brought me again closer to painting.

My husband Doug and I built our first home in the White Mountains of Eastern Arizona giving me a new opportunity for adventure and landscapes. I prefer to paint out doors “Plein Air” and am equally as comfortable doing studio work painting images of horses, old buildings and still life’s either from outdoor studies or from my own photographs.

Since 2000, I have completed several Plein Air classes taught by William Scott Jennings in Sedona, Arizona. I am a member of the Art Alliance of the White Mountains, where I received, in 2004, first place in the annual juried summer painting exhibition. In 2005, I was honored to have a painting selected to be in the top 100 Arts for Parks Competition and in 2006, I fulfilled a longtime dream of traveling down into the Grand Canyon on a river painting excursion to paint with other artists. Works created on this excursion were exhibited at the Sedona Art Center. I am now a full time resident of Sedona, Arizona.

Royce Carlson

royceweld.jpg

Background: Royce Carlson creates whimsical welded steel sculptures and architectural oddities using found objects, recycled materials and new steel. He creates his sculptures in Prescott, Arizona.

"I work with recycled steel, found objects, and steel tubing, rebar, etc. I like that I can turn what would ordinarily be considered waste into art. Steel is a versatile material. It is malleable and can be readily shaped with the proper tools and it is strong and durable while also having flexibility. This is perfect for outdoor pieces. Being I create out of joy this is reflected in my work. My style is whimsical, happy and generally pretty abstract. I know I have created a good piece if it makes me smile when I see it. I am self-taught and believe that to be an advantage rather than a hindrance. Among other things, formal training teaches the "rules" about how to make "good art." If there is anywhere that rules should be broken, it is with art."

Royce was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1953. When he was one year old his family moved to Southern California. He went to college at California State University, Fullerton but did not graduate. Yep, he's a dropout! He moved to Washington state in the mid-70's, lived in a commune and had such a great time that the normal world of career s, etc. lost its appeal completely. After some years of unsatisfying attempts to fit himself into the corporate, upwardly-mobile world of the American Dream, he "dropped out" again when he moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1991.

Since then, Royce has worked mostly as an artist although lean times sometimes caused him to fall back on his skills in construction and "handyman" activities. He has no formal artistic training. Until 1999, he was an abstract painter working in acrylic. Welded steel sculpture is a fairly recent thing. Lately, he has been filling his yard with junk steel. He loves to get up in the morning, go to his shop, and decide what he's going to make today.

He is a happy guy and lives with his wife, Juanita, who is also a sculptor.

Background: "Photography is the ability to take objects from real space (our environment) and juxtapose them into framed space."

While this still rings true to me I need to add part two, "And stay true to your vision". Photography has been and will continue to be a journey. The photographs I take are not necessarly beautiful but they are my "vision". That is the way I see the world around me...it's exciting to see objects "from the streets" juxtaposed in an interesting way. Just as it is exciting to see natural mutiple exposures while "window shopping".

As my vision continues to grow I see the light and shadows...the forms and shapes of "Westfork" and "Landscapes".

Barbara Andress: A nationally known music-educator retired from the school of Music, Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Retirement afforded her the opportunity to venture into the world of three dimensional art of welded steel with a secondary interest in wood carving. The essence of her work is primarily in the area of stylistic figurative representations and organic forms.

Barbara Andress: “Drawing with hot steel has become my real passion, whether the sketching is stylized figures, birds, branches or leaves.” Barbra's work is exhibited at Kinion Fine Art, Sedona, Arizona and Mountain Artists Gallery and the Civic Center in Prescott, AZ and the Artspace in Scottsdale, AZ.

Deanne Brewster: The magic of clay created a passion that has been with Deanne since she made her first pot at an evening class in 1965. Throughout the next 33 years, during her career in the computer industry, art has provided both balance and therapy.

In 1998, Deanne and her husband built a home and studio in Prescott, Arizona where her primary focus has been functional and decorative mid-fired stoneware, both hand-built and hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel. Her formal training has included ceramics classes and workshops at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, the Sedona Arts center and Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona.

Deanne Brewster: “My objective is to share my creativity by turning clay into pottery that provides function and enjoyment to many.”

Deanne's work is exhibited at Kinion Fine Art, Sedona, Arizona, the Mountain Artists Gallery and A’Loft Gallery, Prescott, AZ. and the Artspace in Scottsdale, Arizona.

His other "sense of place" was shaped by living for five years in Arizona's Sonora desert and developing a love for the American southwest. Of Celtic decent, his direct-line ancestors include most of the Kings of Scotland as well as a Cherokee grandmother from Arkansas of which his art reflects both heritages.

Dale's work has been described as being haunting, healing and a connection with the spirit; while his own personal definition of art is when it communicates with the spirit it reachs it's highest potential.

From the time he was a child he had a desire to be an artist; however, being life seems to take its own turnshe spent most of it as a businessman and entrepreneur. In the 1980's he discovered he had a love for sculpture and was able to find time to produce a number of bronzes for private collectors. Now retired from the business world he is able to pursue his dream of being an artist full time.

Other than bronze, Dale also creats art in fired clay, acrylic and other mixed media.

Background: Liam Herbert, a sculptor and veteran of the Broadway theater company, strives to reveal the spirit within wood and bronze and the spirit within ourselves as he carves and sculpts simple tall, graceful figurative forms which invite viewers to be moved on a deep and personal, heart felt level.

“I am a Gemini, a personality, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Art should be emotional, controversial and beautiful. It is all in the eye of the beholder. One of my favorite things to do when I was a kid was to climb as close to the top in a tree as I could get and stare out at whatever was around. I have a connection to the wood. Everything for me springs from the growth of a tree. Each tree speaks a special language to me. My father (also an artist) and I used to visit the studio of renowned wood sculptor, Raoul Hague, in Woodstock, NY where I found great inspiration.

I attended the school of Visual Arts in New York City in advertising while at the same time sculpting a 20’ piece at my father’s country home in Pennsylvania and also working as a prop man on Broadway. Dad was a production property master for all 105 of the David Merrick shows so for about 50 of them I apprenticed with him. My instructors encouraged me to continue my art. In 1992 my wife Sylvia and I moved to Sedona connecting with the emotional thread that runs through all of my art and the unique, spiritual qualities of Sedona. I want to express emotional feelings through my art in simple forms, expressing the original premise of mankind - to become more compassionate towards one another. I just want to be able to help people through art. Some people who see my work have tears in their eyes, there is an emotional connection. This means a lot to me.”

As a young man he lived near Rainbow Springs in the mountains where his family herded sheep. “Slimnez”, John’s grandpa, was a silversmith who traded food for supplies for his entire village and helped support the village by making spoons and pots.

Melvin's talented art consists of Metal Sculpture, Stainless Steel, Copper, Clay Masks and Acrylic Painting that reflects the Navajo Stories and way of life, taught to him by his mother. During his childhood Melvin witnessed the process of sand painting. The Yei’s are the Navajo Holy Gods (Diety’s) who heal the sick. I create “Healer Sculptures” of the Hohokum design. My Colors speak of the sky color and mother earth, the warm tones of morning awakening.”

He uses natural parrot tails from peyote fans, “feathers on which songs and prayers are carried.” The mouths of his masks are made of bamboo and around the necks are symbols of juniper branches-the smell is believed to create a strongervoice.

He credits his mother, who is a highly respected Navajo Master Weaver and her teachings led him to many heights in his life. “She comes to guide me as I work.” She informed him that one day his creativity will provide him abundance in his life. He just had to respect his work, discipline himself, remain humble and never forget his people and origin.

Leila.jpg Background: Leila (pronounced Lee-EYE-lah) Kirkley was born and raised in the Midwest.

Background: Linda J. Lee’s Southwestern collection “Light and Landscape” combines spectacular terrain with dramatic illumination infused with vivid color. From the majestic panorama of “Bright Angel Point” to the flowing cloud layers in “Sunrise at Superstition Mountain” to the fascinating and equally amusing “Art Walk”, her paintings depict the beauty of nature, yet transcends the realistic. Each is a generous portion of a grand, visual feast which celebrates the landscape.

Linda J. Lee: “Art is a quest for the discoveries that reward both viewer and artist.”

Her quest for these discoveries has taken her across much of the United States and Europe. She has studied with master artists John-Seerey-Lester, Le Conte Stewart, David Wade and Paco Young. When not experimenting with new ways to infuse a painting with light, she looks for new places to travel. She has developed a strong interest in the landscape of the Southwest, especially Arizona.

Linda J. Lee is represented by Kinion Fine Art, Sedona, Arizona. Many of her paintings reside in private collections.

Background: Art has always been an important part of my life. This interest was fostered and encouraged by my mother who is also an artist. I attended one of the first arts magnet high schools (Skyline) in Dallas, TX. I continued studying art through college, receiving my BFA from UT Austin in 1978. My first exposure to working with glass was a job at John Kebrle Studio in Dallas. This was followed by working with Susan Stinsmuehlen at Renaissance Glass in Austin, TX. Through Susan, I was able to assist her at the Pilchuck Glass School in Oregon in 1982 and 1983.

A move to San Francisco in 1979 expanded my artistic awareness. I worked in various glass studios in the Bay Area for eight years. At that point I decided to attend graduate school at San Jose State University and received my MFA in 1987. For the last twenty years I have been a self-employed artist. My artwork is shown and collected in the U.S.A. and internationally. When I look back on pivotal experiences, certain events come to mind such as: my apprenticeship at Bullseye Glass Company in Portland, OR, 1983; being a Visiting Artist at the New York Experimental Glass Center, 1988; and traveling around the world in 1996.

I enjoy creating sculpture. This exploration has ventured into areas such as: color, natural materials, representation, abstraction, functionality, symbols and aesthetic beauty. I have tried to find and develop an original voice. This is an ongoing process that invigorates and sustains my life. As my experiences broaden with age, travel, and continued learning, I look forward to seeing what new artistic developments will follow. Since 1998, I have had two studios, one in San Francisco, CA and the other in Blanco, TX, in the heart of the Hill Country. The chance to live and work in two locations has shaken things up and allowed new ideas to generate.

Background: Born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, P. Ronald Schneider received his formal education as an Electrical Engineer with a masters in Business Administration. Job transfers brought him to Arizona in 1973 and the exposure to many different types of art exhibited in the Southwest encouraged him to try his hand at becoming an”artist.” He soon realized that the logical brain of an engineer could think about what the final product should look like but there was considerable “skill” required to connect concept with the finished product.

P. Ronald Schneider’s first endeavors consisted of some sculpting and lost wax silver casting before settling upon a mixed media type of format for the wall hangings. “I love the Southwest architecture, particularly that which is aged, weathered or in disrepair; for I believe the true art is in replicating these conditions, not just in copying them.”

“I am currently producing a series of portals, labeled America’s Front Doors featuring doorways, archways, building fronts and windows typical of those found in the Southwest. Most are replicas of actual buildings discovered in my travels and readings.”

P. Ronald Schneider exhibits at the Sedona Arts Center and Kinion Fine Art, Sedona, Arizona.

Background: Santos faith art or religious folk art is a viable and tangible representation of invisible celestial beings. These symbols of sainted personages first came into being about 1780 and held a large following until about 1902. They embodied the religious spirit and asperations of the New Mexico Spanish immigrants whose faith was bolstered by the carved figures and allowed them to cope with the rigors and dangerous fronter life.

Among those who are reknown for these carving is Howard Shupe the son of the famed New Mexico Santo (Saint) carver Elmer Shupe of Taos, New Mexico.

Having carved Santo's figures with his father in the 1940's, he began carving full time after 35-years with the New Mexico and Arizona Forest Service. Since Howard began carving full time his Santo's figures are now in collectiojns ranging from the United States to South America and now cover a wide variety of religious saints. His style is considered as traditional as the old carvers of 150-years past.

Background: Carolyn Travisano discovered her love for art early in life. She attributes much of her passion for art to her father who enjoyed woodcarving and painting. “My first memories are literally of my father, oil painting and wood carving,” she said. “Watching him create was very inspiring - he would transform a hunk of wood or blank canvas into a work of art - it was fascinating and had a strong effect on me.”

Soon, she was picking up a brush or pencil and creating her own work, which received attention right from the start. Travisano earned numerous awards, including scholarships and admission to Ringling School of Art and Design, in Sarasota, Fla. There, she was formally trained as an illustrator and garnered mention in Who’s Who Among College Students.

Her greatest influence? “My life changed in Sarasota when I was first exposed to the work of artists Robert Bateman and Frank Howell. Howell’s mystical images of Native American people took my breath away.” “When I looked at their faces, I felt what they had experienced. Every wrinkle on their face told a different story,” said Travisano. Desiring to see all the southwestern art she could, Travisano took many trips to New Mexico and Arizona, including the Frank Howell Gallery, in Santa Fe. She finally moved to Sedona,AZ eight years ago as many of the artists that inspire her today are live and work in local area.

Bill’s artistic background is unique as he didn’t become an artist until late in life. Bill retired from the US Army after having served 24-years active service. His last 14-years in the U.S. Army was as a US Army Special Forces (Airborne) Green Beret. On 4 April 2001, at Fort Bragg, NC, after more than three decades of secrecy, the president of the United States, awarded the Presidential Citation (equivalent to America's second highest award for valor-the Distinguished Service Cross) to Bill and other military personnel who served with a Top Secret combat unit (MACVSOG) during the Vietnam War. While with the unit Bill commanded and led a small team (ST-Illinois) that conducted guerrilla operations behind enemy lines.

Having lived outside the Continental United States for more than 20-years, his completed works of art depict the colors and symbols associated with ethnic influences found only in Central American and Far Eastern cultures.

After retireing Bill, through the use of the GI Bill, completed his civilian studies. Although his college major was Agriculture Science, his interest in art and art history, influenced his study and he became a self-taught artist. Bill constructs assemblages, paints with oil and acrylic paints and works with ceramic clays. After more than a decade of experimentation Bill developed a mixture of porcelain and stoneware clays that upon being high-fired, at a temperature range of about 2300° Fahrenheit, the consistency of the final product is similar to that of of obsidian glass. Although, the black ceramics are objects of art, many can be used as functional forms of ceramic ware.

Bill married artist Miro FitzGerald in 1990.
